Street Art Interns
June 14, 2011
In Tuesday’s gossip, it looks like the street art industry operates much the same as the other culture industries: take some bright-eyed, eager young folks (we call them “interns“) and have them do a bunch of crap work–you know, making coffee, taking out the garbage, doing data entry, reading the slush pile, wheat pasting posters–and then let their effort pass uncredited and little appreciated. But throwing up posters? You get to do that if you volunteer for one-man brand Shepard Fairey, whose wife recently let slip that he hasn’t been out pasting up pieces since ”a long time ago.” Here at MBP, we wouldn’t have treated that as a gaffe, we would have just laughed: people are practically begging us to shine our shoes, how could we take the pleasure of doing our work away from them? That would just be mean. We’re not cruel.
