Notations 21 in Creative Review
May 27, 2009
The long awaited, much anticipated Notations 21 is finally available and we think it’s been worth the wait. The book’s contributors agree and now the press will be chiming in on the matter.
The June issue of Creative Review has dedicated 4 pages to Notations 21 in a great piece by David Crowley, “The Art of Noise.” Using Alex Ross’s The Rest is Noise, an examination of 20th century classical music, as a point of entry, Crowley credits Notations 21 for being able to capture something that Ross’s book didn’t, “the dissonance, abstraction and downright impenetrability of music by composers like Arnold Schoenberg or Karlheinz Stockhausen,” by showcasing the range of illustrated musical scores that have been created over time.
You’ll have to buy the issue to read the review, or buy the book!
